Dear colleagues,
Earlier this afternoon, you received a message from University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold regarding Governor Pillen’s budget memo directing state agencies to reduce spending in response to a projected state revenue shortfall.
We do not yet have full clarity on how these measures will affect the University of Nebraska–Lincoln specifically. However, many of you have told me how important it is to hear from your leaders during times of uncertainty, even when all the details are not yet known. While we are still gathering information, I felt it was important to reach out before the weekend, as many of you may have questions. Our Executive Leadership Team is working with the President’s Office and appropriate state policymakers to better understand the expectations that may be placed upon us. I will share what I learn as soon as I am able.
What I do know is this: over the past year—and over many years before that—you have met repeated budget reductions with extraordinary resolve. That resolve is a testament to your professionalism, resilience, and commitment to this institution. At the same time, we must acknowledge what these cycles have cost us. They have placed strain on our academic programs and research enterprise. They have tested the culture and shared sense of purpose that define this university. No one does their best work under the weight of uncertainty, and we cannot ask our students to reach their full potential—or expect to attract and retain the faculty, staff, and leaders our mission requires—if stability remains perpetually out of reach.
A great university requires stability to fulfill its promise. Just as I ask for your continued commitment to this institution, I want you to know that this institution is dedicated to you. We will pursue clarity with urgency and determine next steps with the needs of our students, faculty, and staff as our highest priority.
You will hear more from me next week.
Respectfully,
Katherine S. Ankerson
Interim Chancellor, University of Nebraska–Lincoln
