Message from the Chancellor - Michael Zeleny

August 7, 2025

Colleagues:

Following three decades of steadfast service to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Michael Zeleny has shared with me his selection as senior vice president, chief financial officer and chief operating officer at Catholic University of America, located in Washington, D.C. His last day at UNL will be September 2.

A native Nebraskan and two-time UNL alum, Vice Chancellor Zeleny worked more than 20 years in UNL’s Office of Research and Economic Development, where he helped propel the university’s research growth and economic impact, before serving as chief of staff and associate to the chancellor under Dr. Ronnie Green’s leadership. Most recently as vice chancellor, he has provided oversight for the university’s financial, operations, human resources, risk management, campus police, and auxiliary business functions, among other areas. I appreciate his tireless engagement and sound counsel for the university’s Executive Leadership Team as we have worked together to address the structural budget deficit, among many other critical institutional initiatives.

To celebrate Vice Chancellor Zeleny’s service, the university will hold a farewell reception on Thursday, August 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Morrill Hall, with remarks at 5 p.m. I invite you to join us in congratulating Mike and wishing him well as he begins this new chapter.

In the coming weeks, I plan to identify an interim who will serve in this role until the position is filled on a permanent basis. Reporting to the chancellor, the vice chancellor for business and finance is responsible for oversight and administration of the university’s operating budget in accordance with university policy and state and federal laws. The position serves as UNL’s chief financial and operating officer and pursues operational excellence, innovation, and efficiency across all business services, campus police, parking, human resources, facilities, and related operational units. The position also serves on the chancellor’s Executive Leadership Team.

Again, please join me in congratulating Mike, and I hope to see you on August 21.

Sincerely,

Rodney D. Bennett
Chancellor
