Guidance on Title II accessibility deadline

April 24, 2026

Dear colleagues,

Since the 2024 announcement of updated Title II digital accessibility requirements, you have made outstanding progress toward achieving compliance and making the ways we teach, learn and engage with everyone who uses UNL content more accessible. We are very grateful to you for that, as well as for the work of the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance, the Center for Transformative Teaching, and Academic Technologies in guiding these efforts.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced this Title II digital accessibility compliance deadline would be extended by one year to April 26, 2027. No other part of this regulation was changed.

How does this affect UNL?

  • Our expectations and commitment for achieving compliance have not changed. Making our content accessible is the right thing to do for our students, employees, alumni and community partners who rely on us.
  • While we have made great progress in improving accessibility, we still have important work to do. This one-year extension provides an additional opportunity to engage in thoughtful and sustainable implementation efforts for complex digital content and technology. We expect our community to build upon our efforts, not postpone them.
  • We ask all faculty and staff to continue making it a priority to ensure your digital content is accessible.

You may find a series of resources to support digital accessibility compliance efforts at ada.unl.edu. The experts within the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance are also a great resource for answering questions and providing best practices.

Thank you for your continued work to expand accessibility for our students, faculty, staff and members of the public who rely on UNL resources. Our university serves people across the state and around the world, and the work you do to improve accessibility is another way we fulfill our commitment that, at Nebraska, every person and every interaction matters.
